Yturrino Helps Lehighton Rally Past Jim Thorpe

The Jim Thorpe Olympians welcomed the Lehighton Indians Thursday night in boys basketball. Jim Thorpe was looking to avenge their loss in the Rotary Tournament by a score of 47-37. Lehighton came in with a 5-5 record, while Jim Thorpe came in with a record of 1-7. The game tipped off at 7:30.

The first quarter was a close match between Lehighton and Jim Thorpe. Jim Thorpe led 7-6 at the end of the first. Lehighton and Jim Thorpe stayed close as Jim Thorpe went into halftime with a 15-14 lead over Lehighton. In the third quarter, junior Richard Yturrino scored all of Lehighton’s 13 points. Jim Thorpe added 14 points to increase their lead to 29-27 at the end of the third. Lehighton went on a 5-0 run at the beginning of the fourth to take their first lead of the game by a score of 32-29. Lehighton would then use this momentum to win the game by a score of 43-39.

Lehighton improves to 6-5, while Jim Thorpe falls to 1-8. Lehighton’s top scorers were Yturrino, the D11Sports player of the game, with 19 points, with an additional 11 points by junior Zach Hunsicker. Lehighton’s next game is Monday January 6th as they host the Pine Grove Cardinals. Jim Thorpe’s top scorer was junior Jordan Burak with 13 points. Jim Thorpe’s next game is Saturday, January 4th as they host the Fleetwood Tigers.
