It was intense on both sides, but Mahanoy Area stopped Minersville from going undefeated in league play. This game between two Schuylkill League forces was won by Mahanoy Area 47-30 over the second-seed Minersville in a boys’ basketball contest Monday evening.
Tanner Zawada took the lead for the Golden Bears in scoring with his 16 points. Jayce Yedsena netted 14 points and William Mayberry had nine points, all three-pointers. Other scorers include Peyton Sendatch (2) and Ryan Zilker (2). The Battlin’ Miners had Shazier Bethea lead them in scoring with nine points. Bradley Kostishak collected six points and Jordan Bowers scored five points. Other Minersville scorers were Logan Hutsko (2), Chase Zimerofsky (4), Dawsyn Manning (2), and Dante Carr (2).
At the end of the first quarter, the Golden Bears were up 12-6 with Mayberry having half of those points. Mahanoy had a 26-17 lead at the halftime mark, but Zawada was tied with Mayberry as the leading scorer. The Golden Bears had a ten-point lead when the third quarter concluded but there was another scoring leader change with Yedsena having 12 going into the fourth. Mahanoy had all of the control in this game with their 17-point win. Minersville was on an 11-0 scoring run to end the third quarter but that was all the Battlin’ Miners had. Two players for Minersville fouled out, Dante Carr and Dawsyn Manning. No one fouled out for Mahanoy Area.
The next test for Minersville is a home match against Panther Valley with a scheduled tipoff on Thursday at 7:30. Will the Golden Bears of Mahanoy Area remain undefeated with their next contest? They will be on the road against Tamaqua, which is scheduled for Thursday at 7 pm.
