2026 Outlook: The Cardinals are coming off their first winning season in school history, as well as the best record in school history finishing 8-4. The Cardinals won both rivalry games this past season (The Old Oaken Bucket & The Pride of The Mountain) for the first time since 2019. East made it to the PIAA 5A Championship game and lost to Whitehall 35-24. Just one season prior, the Cardinals faced Whitehall in a Semi-Final game and lost 49-7. The improvement in just two years behind new Head Coach Dustin Thomas and staff is easy to acknowledge.

To go along with such a stellar team season, many individuals broke school records of their own including 1,000 WR Justin Williams who will be continuing his college football career at East Stroudsburg University. Connor Triano, a swiss army knife for the Cardinals last season, also notched his name in the record books with most receptions in a game with 11 vs Stroudsburg last year and will be continuing his football career at Lycoming College. The Cardinals will be without many big name skill players this upcoming season so many questions will remain unanswered until this Fall where we will see if the Cardinals can match their major overhaul of building a consistent winning program.

While many big stars will be missed, Quarterback Ceejay Serfass will be returning under the helm. In his first season at QB last year, Serfass broke the school record for Passing yards and Touchdowns in a single season. With his experience and an entire offensive line who will be returning, the Cardinals and Serfass will be in good hands. All defensive lineman will be returning as well, and with many pieces to rotate in along the defensive line, East will be looking to improve on their defensive efforts which landed them #1 in points allowed and team defense in their division in 2025. Going into his third season as Defensive Coordinator, Bobby Fox will look to stay consistent and find some missing pieces to complete his defense.

2026 Outlook: Entering their third season under Coach Henrich and his staff, the Rough Riders look to transition from a developing program into a consistent postseason contender.

The team’s trajectory has shown steady progress over the last two years. After navigating the initial growing pains of a new system, the Rough Riders took a step forward last season, finishing 4-8 with an improved regular-season record and earning a berth in the district playoffs. While the postseason appearance was a valuable milestone for a young roster, it also served as a clear indicator of the program’s upward trend.

With two full seasons now under their belt, the players possess a deeper, more instinctive understanding of the coaching staff’s schemes and expectations.

That familiarity, combined with another full offseason in the strength and conditioning program, has yielded a roster that is physically bigger, stronger, and more mature. The varsity experience gained by underclassmen over the past two winters and autumns has created a deeper, more seasoned depth chart heading into camp.

With the foundation firmly in place and a veteran core leading the way, the Rough Riders enter the 2026 campaign prepared for the physical and mental demands of the schedule, aiming to parlay last year’s playoff experience into a more competitive weekly performance.

2026 Offensive Outlook: Return strong nucleus of skill players from last year. Need to replace two starting OL and RB. The progress our young offensive linemen make will be key. Becoming more efficient on offense and playing more complementary football will be important to our success.

2026 Defensive Outlook: Excited about our defensive potential. All four starting defensive linemen return, which is a good start. Tyler Price will move from our OLB/SS hybrid to MLB this season. We will stress tough, physical play on defense and continuing to be opportunistic with turnover opportunities like we were last season when we had 20 interceptions in the season.

2026 Special Teams Outlook: Both specialists (Jah Bushati & Jake Tom) graduated, so these will be important spots to fill.

Tyler Rebarchak will take over as place kicker.

Punter will be one of Tyler Price or Gregory Tirpak.

Returners will be back. Dante Tate, Tyler Price all returned for us last season and will do so again.

2026 Offensive Outlook: The Cardinals enter the 2026 season looking to improve from last season while embracing the challenges of a new schedule that features several unfamiliar opponents. Pine Grove Area must replace 10 seniors who were starters or key contributors in all three phases of the game, making this one of the youngest teams in recent memory. More than two-thirds of the roster consists of freshmen and sophomores, but the coaching staff is excited about the potential this group possesses.

The key to the season will be how quickly the younger players develop. Many will be asked to take on significant roles immediately, and their growth throughout the year will be critical to the team’s success. While there will undoubtedly be growing pains, the Cardinals believe the experience gained this fall will serve as the foundation for future success as the program continues to build.
Pine Grove Area returns its top offensive production from a year ago in senior running back Logan Troup, the team’s leading rusher, and senior wide receiver Teagan Schneck-Haines, last season’s leading receiver. Both will be counted on to lead the offense while providing stability for a new starting quarterback.

The Cardinals will also feature several new starters along the offensive line. Although the group lacks varsity experience, it has shown promise and has the potential to develop into a strength as the season progresses. Sustaining drives, protecting the quarterback, and finishing possessions with points will be key to the offense’s success.

2026 Defensive Outlook: The defense returns a solid core of experienced players led by Schneck-Haines in the secondary, Troup at linebacker, and Kolbey Buffington along the defensive front. With slightly more returning experience on this side of the ball—particularly in the box—the Cardinals expect the defense to provide consistent production and serve as a foundation for the team’s success throughout the season.

2026 Special Teams Outlook: Troup and Schneck-Haines return to anchor the return game. Pine Grove Area will break in a new kicker and punter this season, with C.J. Herber and Terrin Witmer expected to take over those responsibilities.

2026 Offensive Outlook: We need to stay healthy as the 2025 season was injury marred. With a nice nucleus of player returning, we need to play consistently and fundamentally sound. Finishing off drives, winning the turnover battle and keeping the chains moving are a priority.

2026 Defensive Outlook: Defensively, we return a nice amout of players who gained valuable experience last year with the injury bug that bit us. We need to stay healthy, read keys, know our alignments and assignments along with executing at a high level. Focusing on takeaways and tackling will be a high priority headed into camp along with establishing consistent pressure from our up front guys.

2026 Special Teams Outlook: We need to be consistent in our efforts and establish field position with our kicking game.

2026 Offensive Outlook: We return 8 fulltime starters and two players that starterd 3 games last year. We feel like we have a veteran group with multiple three year starters. We need to develop depth with our offensive line. We feel very good about our starting 11. This group has worked very hard in the off-season to get better.

2026 Defensive Outlook: We return a veteran group defensively as well. Our defensive backfield has three players that will now be in their 4th year as starters. We feel that group will anchor our defense. Our linebacking group is strong as well. We are led by Mason Rothrock who is a 3 year starter at LB. We have an excellent Jr. in Paul Porobensky who started the last 4 games at LB and Chase Gall will be transitioning from DE to LB to fill out that group. Up front we need to replace Chase Gall at DE. However, our three returners were excellent last year. We are led by Bill Slattery (all-state), Landen Klimek, and Dawson Newhard. We must find depth on our defensive line.

2026 Special Teams Outlook: We return both our kicker and field goal kicker in Anthony Hanna. He was excellent last year and has improved his distance and height this off-season. We retrun Chase Gall as Punter and have Bryce Wanamaker who can also kick. We return all of our returners. we feel this group can be dynamic.

2026 Outlook:
Offense: Starting QB returns, All EPC RB Lasahawn Johnson returns after suffering a season ending knee injury in week 9. Some experience also returns in the WR corps and the O line.

Defense: Experience returns at all three levels of the Defense. The LB core has the most experience. The secondary could feature a number of young talented sophomores that need to get varsity game ready quickly because of the nature of our schedule.
