Becahi upsets the undefeated Red Rovers

On January 12th, the undefeated Red Rovers were off to face their biggest basketball challenge yet. The game between the Rovers and Becahi lady Golden-Hawks was a hard-fought battle up until the final buzzer. The Hawks held off the undefeated Rovers giving them their first loss of the season with a final score 62-50.

The Hawks started the game slower and struggled to get boards but started to pick it up in the second quarter and throughout the rest of the game. The Hawks changed their game plan and came out at half-time shutting down opportunities for the Rovers to score in the paint. That led to Becahi gaining more opportunities on offense and capitalizing from beyond the arc. Becahi senior guard Cici Hernandez stated after the game, “All of our production came from the mindset of just treating it like another game, and not having us get in our own heads.” She finished the game with 19 points and helped lead the Hawks to the win. Coach Alleyne had this to say about his team and the game, “We needed to keep our composure. We played a good team, but keeping a calm and controlled mindset was what was most important.” He is looking to achieve much more in his first year as head coach.

As for the Red Rovers, they started the game hot grabbing rebounds and getting shots to go in the paint. After the first, they started losing a little bit of momentum but a timeout call from Coach Lutz helped get them back in control of themselves. It was again another big night for senior center, Evalyse Cole, who finished with 15 points and was backed up by junior forward, Kourin Carew, who helped lead a late-game surge by converting on buckets in the paint late in the fourth. It seemed as if for every adjustment Coach Lutz made, Becahi had a counter for it. It will be a tough week at practice for Easton.

This game looked to be a huge momentum boost for the Golden Hawks. Easton is looking to return to the winning side of things and continue their strong season.
