Nazareth Makes a Statement in First Win of the Season Over Central Catholic

The defending District 11 Class 6A 2019-20 Blue Eagles came ready to play on their Friday night season opener. While many of last season’s headliner players are gone, this Nazareth team is not short o\n talent and leadership.

Central Catholic was first to strike with a touchdown late in the first quarter. However, the momentum was quickly shifted with a 27-yard touchdown from Nazareth’s Matt Bugbee to Jaiden Cabrera. The Blue Eagles punched in two more unanswered touchdowns just before halftime, with help from a recovered punt by Nazareth’s Sean Ward at the Central Catholic one-yard line and the score by Alex Kwiatek.

After halftime, an impressive 41-yard field goal by Nazareth was answered with a touchdown by the Vikings, bringing the game to 27-13 in the third. The Eagles added to their lead with a rushing touchdown by Tyler Rohn. Central Catholic responded with one more score to take the game’s final score to 33-20.

While Nazareth’s offense put up some impressive numbers, the defense was able to keep the Vikings on lock. Last week, Central put up a powerful score, beating Whitehall 34-13. Nazareth’s defense was able to keep Central’s strong running game on lock this week. Nonetheless, notable numbers were put up by several Vikings players, including Jack McGorry’s 135 yards.

Both teams fought a hard game the entire way through, but Central Catholic now falls to 1-1, while Nazareth takes a 1-0 start to the 2020-21 season, where they look to defend their district title.
