Union is Defeated by Undefeated Phillipsburg

Union traveled to Maloney stadium to take on the undefeated Phillipsburg Stateliners. It was senior night for P’burg so they had the motivation to secure the win in this game. Union usually makes it a challenge for P’burg, but it did not seem like that this game.

The game started out with a 49-yard receiving TD from Kevin Burgess which put Phillipsburg on the board 6-0. The Stateliners had unbelievable defense in the first half with an interception by Junior Cameron Bohal. This got the Liners the ball back. Sophomore QB Jett Genovese and sophomore WR Matt Scerbo have had amazing chemistry this whole season, and it did not stop this game. A beautiful 18-yd passing TD to Scerbo made the score 12-0. Caleb Rivera caught a two-point conversion pass from Nick Stettner to make the score 14-0.

Union threw a total of three interceptions this game, and it definitely helped Phillipsburg. At the start of the second quarter, Senior Hunter Cleaver got a 67-yard pick six to make the score 20-0. Phillipsburg’s pass coverage was on point in this game. Union then fought back with a close passing TD to make the score 20-7. This ended the first half.

Phillipsburg has always been a tough team defensive wise and this season has definitely shown that. Cameron Bohal has a total of five interceptions this season alone. It has definitely helped the Liners get the ball back.

The start of the third quarter had Phillipsburg marching down the field to get to the one-yard line. Sophomore QB Jett Genovese then ran a QB sneak into the endzone to make the score 27-7. Union then retaliated and got a running TD to make the score 27-14.

The fourth quarter resulted in Union not scoring any points. Genovese had yet another rushing TD to make the score 34-14. Jett has definitely shown that he is very versatile to get into the endzone with six passing TD’s and six Rushing TD’s. The last points of the game came from Junior John Wargo, with him getting a nine-yard rushing TD. The final score was 41-14.

Phillipsburg took advantage of Union’s offensive mistakes this game. Union threw three interceptions the whole entire game. Also, Pburg dominated the rushing game with the Liners getting 223 yards and Union only getting 103. Xavier Moore was the main contributor getting 118 yards this game. Overall, Pburg’s astonishing defense and very tough offense got them to win this game and remain undefeated. Phillipsburg’s next game is against the 0-7 East Brunswick.
