SOFTBALL: Tri-Cape Edges Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup All-Stars 5-4 in Elimination Quarterfinal

The Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup softball team saw its tournament run come to an end Wednesday morning, falling to Tri-Cape, 5-4, in an elimination quarterfinal matchup.

Despite outhitting Tri-Cape 8-2, Lehigh Valley was unable to overcome a decisive five-run second inning that proved to be the difference.

Lehigh Valley struck first in the top of the first inning. Natalie Lilly reached and eventually scored on a fielder’s choice by Peyton Besecker, giving Lehigh Valley an early 1-0 lead.

Tri-Cape answered in the bottom of the second despite collecting only two hits in the game. Kaylin Marshall scored on a dropped third strike and passed ball sequence before Graillyn Weber delivered a run-scoring single to right field that scored Alyssa Pierce and Talia Guardascione.

Later in the inning, Leah Alexander grounded out to bring home Weber, capping a five-run frame and putting Tri-Cape ahead 5-1.

Lehigh Valley chipped away at the deficit throughout the game. Peyton Besecker scored in the fourth inning on Maddie Bixler’s RBI double to cut the lead to 5-2.

The comeback effort continued in the seventh. Maddie Bixler came through again with a two-run triple to center field, scoring Sydney Bennett and Besecker to pull Lehigh Valley within one run at 5-4. However, Tri-Cape recorded the final out before the tying run could cross the plate.

Besecker led the Lehigh Valley offense, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Bixler had a huge day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, triple, and three RBIs. JoJo Siegfried added two hits, while Sydney Bennett scored once and collected a hit.

In the circle, Mari Eiswerth started and was charged with the loss after working two innings. Maddie Bixler was outstanding in relief, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing no hits and striking out five. Rylee Gable also contributed a scoreless inning.

For Tri-Cape, Graillyn Weber accounted for half of her team’s hits, finishing 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Ava Scuderi earned the victory in the circle.

Although the result ended Lehigh Valley’s Carpenter Cup journey, they showed resilience until the final out, nearly completing a dramatic late comeback after trailing by four runs entering the seventh inning.
