On December 9th, 2024, the Wilson Area Warriors faced off against the Lehighton Area Indians in a boys’ basketball game at Wilson Area High School.
The Indians, looking to add to their fourth win of the season, won a hard-fought battle with a final score of 52-46. This victory pushes Lehighton to the best record in the Colonial League. As the season unfolds, this devastating loss for Wilson represents a key win for Lehighton.
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, but the Indian’s defense showed that they came to play from the tip-off. Despite being outsized by Wilson, Lehighton forced numerous steals early in the game. Seniors Brayden Johnson and John Light sparked the fire for Lehighton as their first-quarter buckets outmatched Wilson’s. The first quarter ended with a relatively low score of 14-7, with Lehighton on top.
The Warriors took off running in the second quarter. Coming off the bench was Junior Jason Hall, who ended up finishing the game with a career-high 16 points. Along with help from a few others, Wilson ended up climbing out of the deficit to take a three-point lead going into the second half. On the defensive side of the ball, the Warriors only allowed eight points in the second quarter.
Following the break, Lehighton regained the lead quickly with some flashy scoring from Junior Cole Deitz and Senior Joe Roth, who combined for 37 of Lehightons’ 52 points. Throughout the quarter, both teams exchanged the lead back and forth. Thanks to great defense by the Indians, they held the lead by one at the end of the quarter.
The fourth quarter had everyone in the gym on the edge of their seats. Similar to the third quarter, both teams exchanged the lead throughout most of the quarter. A few late three-pointers from Lehighton and numerous turnovers and wasted possessions from Wilson led to the Indians running away with the game. As the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard showed 52-46, Lehighton on top.
Lehighton looks to carry this momentum into their game on Wednesday vs Pen Argyl. As for Wilson, they fall to 1-1 on the season and hope to turn things around for Wednesday’s game vs Moravian Academy. It’s still early in the season, but is this strong start for Lehighton a sign that they could be candidates to win the Colonial League?
