Local baseball star commits to Fairleigh Dickinson University

Schuylkill Haven baseball rising senior Alan Evans announced his commitment to Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) on Monday afternoon on Instagram. Evans, who was a pitcher and shortstop for the Hurricanes, will only pitch for the Knights.

FDU, who is Division One, competes in the Northeastern Conference (NEC). The university located in Teaneck, New Jersey has around 8,400 undergraduate students and a total enrollment of 11,000 to 12,000 students.

Evans features a fastball (83-85 MPH), a curveball (74-76 MPH), a slider (74-76 MPH), and a changeup (78-79 MPH) on the mound. He has tossed 48.1 innings this past high school season, and was 7-3 with a 2.10 ERA and 66 strikeouts. At the plate, he had a .481 batting average with 33 hits (7 doubles, 4 triples) along with 29 stolen bases his junior season.

He also plays basketball where he got his 1,000th point this past season at Martz Hall against the Tri-Valley Bulldogs. Along with succeeding on the basketball court, he also does well on the golf course as he placed 15th place out of 131 contestants at the Pennsylvania Boy’s Junior Amateur Championship at the Hershey Country Club. Last year, he was the Schuylkill League runner-up, the District 11 AA champion, and finished in 20th place at the PIAA Championships.

It seems like the Division One blood will keep running in the family as his brother, Albe Evans, played basketball at Fordham University. He (Albe) is the best boy’s basketball player in Hurricanes history.
