The Pen Argyl Knights traveled to Notre Dame High School Friday night where they were handled.
The Notre Dame Crusaders came into this game with a record of 4-2 and Pen Argyl’s record was 2-4. The Crusaders were confident in this win and they delivered. Prior to the game, I spoke to a few players and they all said it was a for sure win. Izzy Rodriguez said, “This will be a game to watch. We won’t let the fans down”.
They did just that cruising past the Knights 63-14. The Crusaders won the toss and decided to receive the ball first.
On the first drive QB Andrew Darno ran for a 26-yard rushing touchdown to put the Crusaders up 7-0. Pen Argyl went ahead and did not answer back as the Crusaders defense was too much for them.
The Crusaders took over next drive and came out stronger than their previous drive. They got all the way to the two- yard line where QB Andrew Darno ran it in for another rushing touchdown putting them up 14-0. Pen Argyl wasn’t ending that first quarter without a fight though. Conor Fehr threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Reto putting them only down seven points to end the first quarter.
The second quarter had Notre Dame Crusaders written all over it. The very first snap of the quarter Matt Frauen ran for 61 yards and scored a touchdown putting them up 21-7. Pen Argyl did not score a single point in the second quarter as the Crusaders shut them down every drive. Also in the second quarter Andrew Darno ran for a nine-yard touchdown making that his third rushing touchdown of the first half, but he was just getting started. To end the half Andrew Darno threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Christian Greggo putting the Crusaders in a comfortable 28-point lead going in at halftime.
I don’t know what was said in that locker room at halftime, but the Crusaders came out firing. Pen Argyl started with the ball in the second half and went four and out. The Crusaders took control and Andrew Darno was back at it again where he ran for a 22-yard touchdown making that his fourth rushing touchdown of the game, but he still wasn’t done. Next time out he threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Christian Greggo ending the third quarter with the score of 49-7.
In the fourth quarter the second strings for the Crusaders came in on offense and defense and things were still the same. A sophomore, Alex Cruz, received his first touchdown of his high school career putting the Crusades up 56-7. Pen Argyl went ahead and had a great drive, but it was too late. They went on and ran it in for one-yard as they were still down 56-14.
The last drive of the game for the Crusaders had the sideline and crowd jumping out of their shoes. Another sophomore, Fabian Galan, took his first carry of the game and ran 60 yards for a touchdown as he celebrated his first high school career touchdown. The Crusaders ended the game in a 63-14 victory.
After the game the Crusaders announced the player of the game. Yes, you guessed it right. Andrew Darno was the player of the game as he had a career game. He threw 16 passes and 11 were completed as he threw for 237 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried the ball seven times and four of them being touchdowns as he had 65 total rushing yards.
Two other key players in the Crusaders victory were Matt Frauen Jr. and Christian Greggo. Frauen had eight carries on 109 yards and one touchdown. Christian Greggo had two carries for 13 yards, but also had three receptions on 128 yards and two touchdowns.
Putting this game in the win column for the Crusaders makes their record 5-2.
Next week the Crusaders travel to Catasauqua where they look to keep the winning streaks alive.
