Kyle Haas made his long awaited return back to Al Erdosy Field to face off against Northampton. The K-Kids, led by Senior QB Cooper, came into the season with a new a head coach in John Toman. Toman, who came from Southern Lehigh, was the head coach for 14 seasons with a 108-54 record resigned in January of 2020. Northampton did not take long to pick him up. Bethlehem Catholic, led by Senior QB Jared Richardson, came into the season with a whole new coaching staff along with Haas.
Both teams started off slow as it was 0-0 after one. Northampton started the scoring in the second with a short field from Santostefano. A few plays later, Jared Richardson dropped back and threw a pass to Junior WR Eric Wert. The pass went through his hands and was intercepted by DB Victor Hunt. Hunt returned the ball for 50 yards and a pick six. The game went to halftime with the K-Kids up 10-0.
The game resumed after a long lightning delay at halftime. Bethlehem Catholic started off quick with a TD in the third quarter to make it 10-7 K-Kids going to the fourth. Northampton had to punt and pinned the Eagles to the 10-yard line.
Richardson drove his team all the way down the field and wasted clock to get a TD with three minutes left in the game. Northampton was down 14-10 starting from the 40-yard line. With about one minute left in the game Cooper King launched a deep ball to Jaelen Richardson for a touchdown.
The K-Kids went up three with 50 seconds left in the game. Jared Richardson once again drove his team down to the 20-yard line with three seconds left setting up a 37-yard field goal to send the game to overtime. But the kick went wide right and the K-Kids pulled away with the win.
Coach John Toman gets his first win in the new scenery at Al Erdosy. Meanwhile, Eric Haas came away with the loss in his first game since leaving Northampton. The K-Kids go to 1-0. They play Pocono Mountain West on the road on Friday, September 3rd. The Eagles go to 0-1 and will play Whitehall at home on Saturday, September 4th.
