Lehighton surges on Homecoming

Pottsville Area made their way to Lehighton for a Colonial Schuylkill matchup on Friday, September 26th. As kickoff creeped closer, both teams were entering at 2-3. The Crimson Tide fell to Southern Lehigh, 35-17 in the game prior. Lehighton had been defeated 50-0 to the Tigers of Northwestern Lehigh in a tough loss last week.

The Tide had chosen to obtain first possession to open the game. It was a back and forth battle in the first quarter. The trenches were in full bore as both lines were full steam ahead. Senior quarterback Jayse Lawerence had a deep pass to wide receiver Caden Meek far downfield to close out the first quarter. Crozier carried the ball multiple times to benefit the Tribe’s position. They were just outside the goal line when a flag had set them back some, but that didn’t affect Lehighton much as Lawerence scrambled to seek Blake Roberts on his right. That had the Tribe sitting at 7-0 with about eight minutes left in the second quarter after Phillip Ebbert completed the extra point.

Following the Indian touchdown, Pottsville’s tight end Maxwell Clews had a solid run to contribute to their drive. The Crimson Tide was inching closer and closer towards the end zone but Crozier of Lehighton, hawked down quarterback Andrew Allen for a drastic interception. It would be called back some but the Indians had possession again. The trio of Austin Green, Lukas Crozier, and Jayse Lawerence all had touches on the ball to piece the drive together. As the second quarter was winding down, Roberts and Meek also acquired some yards gained in the long drive. The Tribe offensive line was dialed in as quarterback Jayse Lawerence weaved through the Pottsville defense to run it in. With just under a minute left until half, that marked the Indians at 14-0.

Lehighton had starting possession as the second half began. They had put together a countless drive which was capped off with Crozier, bringing it in to grab some insurance late in the third quarter. As Pottsville had their chance once more, the game was sitting at 21-0, with roughly six minutes of play in the third. A troublesome Crimson Tide was forced to punt away. Lehighton maneuvered their way to the end zone in their possession as Lawrence looked for an open man in a swarm of Crimson. Caden Meek grasped the ball by a touch in a crowded corner. After the extra point, the Indians were now at 28-0 with little left in the third quarter.

Pottsville had crested the fifty as the third quarter concluded. Numerous attempts to grab the touchdown left the Crimson Tide with a turnover giving the Indians a chance yet again. Lehighton wouldn’t waste much time on their fourth quarter score. Lawrence connected with Ty Nansteel for a short centered pass directly outside the goal line. The Tribe knocked it up to 35-0, and five minutes remained in the final quarter of play.

That would wrap things up for the Indian Homecoming as Pottsville was in the red zone once more but couldn’t capitalize with a touchdown. Lehighton improved to (3-3) as they take on the (3-3) Eagles in Blue Mountain next week, on Friday October 3rd. The Crimson Tide is now (2-4) and looks to bounce back on home grounds against Northwestern Lehigh (6-0) in week 7 of matchups.
