It’s been a long off-season for High School football teams, but for Central Catholic and Whitehall their regular season kicked off last night. Whitehall hosted their first football game at the newly renovated Zephyr Sports Complex. The stunning new turf field and press boxes were a sight to see! Unfortunately no fans could enjoy the game in person last night. Whitehall AD Bob Hartman is hopeful that fans will be allowed at games soon.
Both Central Catholic and Whitehall played a physical first quarter and had a defensive minded game plan. The halftime score was 13-7 in favor of the Vikings. The halftime talk from Coach Tim McGorry proved successful as his Vikings out scored the Zephs 21-6 in the second half.
Jayden Williams, running back for the Vikings, had a career night, rushing for over 200 yards and finding the end zone twice. The Vikings showed their depth in the backfield as running back, Leroy Johnson, also scored two touchdowns. Coach McGorry mentioned before the game that his key to success would be running the ball. He couldn’t have asked for a better performance from his two running backs.
Central Catholic seized control early in the fourth, going up 27-13 and recovering an incidental onside kick. They would add one more score to seal the win, 34-13. At the end of the night, both teams were happy to be back out on the field and excited that football was back.
