Covid Chronicles: Bartholomew Flips Commitment, Mabry and Marrongelle Step Down

With winter sports being pushed back until the new year, the news on Blue Mountain sports is limited. After the football team bowed out with a 17-0 loss to Bethlehem Catholic, the end of the fall season had drawn upon us. Since then, there have been a few pieces of news in the Blue Mountain sports community to talk about.

In volleyball, Coach Nick Marrongelle stepped down as head volleyball coach after a decade of success. Also, seniors Myah Conway and Grace Woll were named to the PVCA Class 3A All-State Team. Marrongelle led Blue Mountain to a 174-32 record in his years as Blue Mountain’s head coach. He leaves the program after back to back Schuylkill League championships and has led one of the most successful senior classes in Blue Mountain volleyball history.

Along with Coach Marrongelle, football head coach Cory Mabry stepped down last week. In eight seasons at Blue Mountain, he compiled a 46-39 record, highlighted by Eastern Conference titles in 3A in 2014 and 4A in 2016. Mabry leaves the program after a 4-5 season this year in a condensed season where the Colonial-Schuylkill League merger was postponed.

Gavin Bartholomew had verbally committed to Buffalo but knew where his heart was. Although he did not yet receive an offer from the University of Pittsburgh, he stayed in contact with the coaching staff to see if he would get the opportunity to get a scholarship offer.

The season went by. Bartholomew had a successful season, showcasing his athleticism on offense by being switched to quarterback from tight end, and menacing opposing offenses at defensive end. His agility and athleticism is what keyed his offer from Pitt. After communicating with both Buffalo and Pitt, Gavin announced his verbal commitment to Pitt on Twitter. Gavin signed his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday and plans to enroll in January to prepare for the preseason.
