The Lehighton Indians faced off against the Jim Thorpe Olympians for their second matchup of the Varsity Boys Basketball season. Jim Thorpe looked to avenge their loss earlier in the season when Lehighton won 39-35. Lehighton came into the game with a 3-2 record, while Jim Thorpe entered with a 2-4 record.
Jim Thorpe had a slight lead, 15-10, over Lehighton at the end of the first quarter. Jim Thorpe doubled their lead at the half, leading Lehighton 32-22. At the half, Richard Yturrino led Lehighton with 11 points while Derryl Fisher led Jim Thorpe with ten points. Jim Thorpe continued to extend their lead at the end of the third quarter, making the score 50-35. Jim Thorpe was led by David Richards and Fisher, each scoring four points, with Kaiden Herron scoring six points. Jim Thorpe was able to hold on despite a near comeback from Lehighton led by Ytturino and Zach Hunsicker, who scored six points and nine points respectively in the fourth quarter. Jim Thorpe held on to win the game by a score of 64-54 and continued their three game winning streak.
Lehighton falls to 3-3 on the season, while Jim Thorpe improves to 3-4 on the season. Lehighton’s top scorers were Yturrino with 19 points along with 15 from Hunsicker. Jim Thorpe’s top scorers were Herron with 25 points and Fisher with 19. Lehighton’s next game is Tuesday, January 26th at 7:00PM as they travel to Pine Grove to take on the Cardinals. Jim Thorpe’s next game is Tuesday January 26th at 5:30PM as they travel to Tamaqua to take on the Blue Raiders.
