After an 0-4 start to the year, the Tamaqua boys basketball team grabbed their second straight win on Friday, Dec. 16 over the Lehighton Indians (3-4) by a score of 55-39.
Tamaqua quickly took a 9-2 lead after two three-point shots by Connor Dillon and one by Cameron Lewis. Tamaqua held their lead after the first quarter by a score of 19-12. The Indians pulled within four points of the Blue Raiders (25-21) ending the half with a 7-0 run.
Midway through the third quarter, Lehighton ate into Tamaqua’s lead, 31-30, as Owen Serfass scored five points during the run to bring the Tribe within one. The Blue Raiders responded with a 9-0 run to close out the third quarter with seven points coming from Noah Mateyak. Tamaqua grabbed a 49-32 lead with four minutes remaining after a 9-2 run to put the game out of reach.
Mateyak led Tamaqua with 17 points. Dillon chipped in 15. For Lehighton, Serfass had 16 points. Joe Roth added eight.
“We took care of the ball and the defense turned it up.” Tamaqua head coach Jim Barron said. “Mateyak made a couple of threes for us and it opened up the whole game. It’s a great team win tonight. We were 0-4 in a bad position and now we’re back where we need to. We put ourselves in the position we need to be.”
MAKE IT THREE… On Saturday, December 17, the Tamaqua boys grabbed a 61-58 victory over Notre Dame East Stroudsburg for their third straight victory. They are now 3-4 on the year.
BEHIND THE ARC… Tamaqua made eight three-point shots on the night. Dillon and Mateyak each had three. Lewis had two.
