Mason Ligenza of Tamaqua Area Drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers

Lots of young baseball players dream of playing at the professional level, but few get that chance. However, Mason Ligenza of Tamaqua Area gets to show why he belongs in the pros.

The 6-foot-5 outfielder was drafted on July 14th in the 2025 MLB Draft as the 195th overall, which is the 6th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Mason was the first player drafted in the MLB Draft from Tamaqua since Gary Zedonek in 1979. He was drafted 612th overall by the Baltimore Orioles.

During Ligenza’s senior season, he batted .448 (26-58) and scored 44 runs, batted 16 runs in, hit four doubles and 11 home runs. He took a walk 29 times and only struck out eight times the whole season. Pitching wise, he was 7-1 with 0.25 ERA in 10 games. He also had 100 strikeouts along with walking 14 batters in 55.1 innings giving up only two earned runs while on the mound. He was ranked 217th overall by MLB.com.

Ligenza joins a solid list of players from Schuylkill County who are currently playing professional baseball such as Travis Blankenhorn (Angels-AA), and Reggie Crawford (Giants-AAA, IL) along with other players.

The young draftee announced his commitment to play college baseball at the University of Pittsburgh in December of 2023. So only one question remains. Will Mason go to college or sign a professional contract?
