The Blue Mountain Girls’ Tennis Team opened up their season with high hopes against Schuylkill Valley on August 31st. The girls got off to a great start with a 5-0 victory over the Panthers. All three singles matches and both doubles matches were won by the Eagles. On Friday September 5th, the Eagles played host to Kutztown.
The match was highly contested and the Eagles got wins from seniors Lauren Gumaer and Lily Wright in the 1 and 2 spots. Unfortunately though, Kutztown’s depth at the doubles positions and number 3 singles propelled them to a 3-2 victory.
The Eagles had to come back the next day and face Berks County powerhouse Wyomissing. The Eagles dropped the match 5-0 to a tough Wyomissing squad. The tennis team has matches this week Tuesday at Tulpehocken, Thursday at Tamaqua, and Saturday at home against Pottsville.
The golf team continued its rampage through the Schuylkill League with two convincing victories this week. On Wednesday, the Eagles’ golfers played host to the Spartans from North Schuylkill High School at Schuylkill Country Club. Led by Junior Connor Gherghel’s even par 72, the Eagles defeated the Spartans by a score of 325-383. North Schuylkill was led by Sophomore Jeff Markosky’s 79. Other players scoring in the match for Blue Mountain were Derrick Yuengling (78), Preston Sincavage (83), and Matt Caulfield (92).
On Friday, the Eagles traveled to Mountain Valley Golf Course to square off against the Pottsville Area Crimson Tide. Senior Derrick Yuengling was on fire for the Eagles and put up a convincing 4 under 68 to lead the Eagles. Junior Connor Ghergel (76), Senior Preston Sincavage (90), and Sophomore Matt Caulfield (90) were the other three scores to count for the Eagles. John Holobetz’ 92 led Pottsville, but the Eagles’ depth proved to be to strong as they took a 324-416 victory.
Blue Mountain students head back to school on Tuesday to start the 2020-2021 school year. The Golf team has two home matches this week and the Football team makes their season debut against rival Schuylkill Haven on their newly turfed field.
