Northwestern rolls past Lehighton to advance to the District XI 4A semifinals

Tiger Stadium in New Tripoli was the sight for the start of postseason play. On Friday night, undefeated Northwestern Lehigh went head to head with Lehighton in the District XI 4A quarterfinals.

The Tigers, the number 3 seed, fell behind early to the 6th seeded Lehighton Indians. Richard Fronheiser connected with Hunter Crum for a 39-yard strike and a 6-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, the Tigers answered as Justin Holmes hit Taylor Weikert in stride 60 yards to give Northwestern a 7-6 lead. They added a Nick Henry 3-yard score and the Tigers were in control up 13-6 after one quarter.

To the second, Holmes and Weikert hook up again, this time 66 yards, to increase the lead to 19-6. Cade Christopher adds to the lead with a seven-yard run that made it 26-6. But, Richard Fronheiser hits Zach Hunsicker for an 11-yard touchdown in the final minute and Northwestern went into the half, up by the score of 26-13.

Second half, more from Holmes, with a 25-yard run, then a 54-yard touchdown pass to Cody Hallock, to break the game open, 40-13. Fronheiser tried to lead a comeback, with a 22 yard touchdown pass to Crum and after three, Northwestern still was up 40-19.

Holmes would add his 5th touchdown of the night, a 54-yard run, and Dalton Clymer would score from 12 yards and Northwestern proved be to much in this one, winning going away, 54-19.

Holmes with 143 yards rushing to lead the Tigers, while Nick Henry added 70 yards on the ground before leaving the game with a quad injury. Lehighton was led on the ground by J.J. McDowell, who rushed for 127 yards.

In a losing effort, Zach Hunsicker caught a touchdown to go along with his 113th career reception, which set a school record. Next up for Northwestern is Wilson on Friday night in the District XI semifinals while Lehighton will play a contingency game on Thursday at Pocono Mountain West.
